The food quinoa or "keen-wah" was used as a staple food by the Incas about 5000 years ago. Quinoa looks like a grain that is why many people consider it as one. But, the fact is, quinoa is actually a seed from the family of spinach and swiss chard. In the evolution of time, quinoa was carefully studied by many scientists. Their studies have shown the many health benefits that quinoa can give. At the present time it is considered and advocated as one of the healthiest and nutrient rich foods. For this reason, many people start to include it in the preparation of healthy meals every day. If you have not tried quinoa and want to include it in your daily meals, here are some suggested tips to follow in quinoa cooking.
Before cooking quinoa, soak, wash and rinse the seeds thoroughly. Doing this will remove saponin and phytic acid. These are the substances covering the quinoa seeds that tastes bitter and can cause difficulties in digestion. There are also pre-rinsed varieties of quinoa available. Even though this type of quinoa do not need soaking, it is best to still wash it in running water. Use warm water for quick soaking. Also, adding B.E wholegrain liquid to the soaking water can help soften the quinoa seeds.


Once quinoa is thoroughly washed, soaked and rinsed, it can already be cooked. Quinoa is prepared like rice. It is usually steamed or boiled in a stovetop or a rice cooker. The difference between rice and quinoa is that the latter requires more exact measurements. In cooking quinoa, one cup of seeds is mixed with 2 cups of water.
After quinoa and water is combined in its right quantity, it is now ready to be boiled or steamed. Use low fire for at least 15 to 20 minutes in cooking quinoa. Do not rush in cooking it over high fire. Overcooked quinoa can feel mushy and taste differently. On the other hand, well cooked quinoa creates a fluffy texture and a nutty flavor. It can even be made fluffier by keeping the pan covered for a few more minutes after quinoa is cooked.
Quinoa is a very versatile food ingredient that is used in many types of dishes. Since many want to eat healthier meals, different quinoa recipes have been introduced. Just like rice, it is used as a side dish for meat. It is also combined with salad for additional nutrients. It is made a part of soup. It is even used as an ingredient in making desserts such as pudding. Most of these recipes are usually made by simply combining cooked quinoa with other ingredients.
